coverage starts right now. i'm eric rasmussen. and hello again everybody, i'm heather holmes. controversy today on the campus where the islamic leader, louis farrakhan, had a speech. others protested the minister and his message. >> what are you afraid of? what is it that i might say to your students or your slaves. >> reporter: minister louis farrakhan opened the black conference at uc berkeley today, bringing others together. >> what i got out of it, how can he can build the black community back up. >> reporter: the -78year-old urged the 600 students to depend on themselves for jobs, and learn more about black history. he also pushed a controversial

book that alleges jews dominated the slave trade. >> and that they controlled the government, you need to be their friend, to me it was so hateful, horrible. >> this is not hate. this is actual facts. >> reporter: outside wheeler hall, a few students passed out these petitions, expressing their anger with the minister's conference here at southern cal. >> i think that students have every right to talk. >> reporter: the minister condemned the opposition and even discouraged dialogue between jews and blacks. >> reporter: but memberses of the community say the message was inspiring. >> we're looking at the statements, how to make the black community powerful, not all the other controversial things he may have said in the past. >> reporter: at berkeley,

lorraine blanco, chivitas. and a 92-year-old woman in critical condition, following one of two terrible fires in the hayward strip mall. in the 300 block of a street, the woman's 60-year-old son got home from work at 3:45 this morning, to find the house in flames. both suffered serious burns, treated at the st. francis burn center in san francisco. then just two hours later, the hayward strip mall had another major fire on their hands, look at this, this fire broke out at a warehouse on jackson street, we first brought you these pictures, the flames and smoke going from the building, the fire crews fought to keep it from reaching the strip mall. a donut shop employee said the customer saw the smoke, and warned her to get out. >> the customer saved my life, yeah. i am so proud for them. he helped me out. >> reporter: fire officials say the business in that mall had

minor damage and could reopen tomorrow. the cause of each of those fires is under investigation. and san jose police arrested two teens suspected in a series of armed robberies last night, it ended just after midnight, when the pair crashed into a patrol car, injuring an officer. 18-year-old spana is in the santa clara county jail, police say his 13 yield helper helped him get away, they are both in jail, both are charged with assault with a deadly weapon on the officer. investigators say the two were responsible for five armed robberies in san jose. and more fallout on the berkeley police chief, regarding the beating of a man last night, the police chief, meehan, apologized for sending a sergeant to the home of reporter doug oakley after midnight, the chief said he

wanted changes to the story. oakley said he made changes, but not all the ones the chief requested. the first amendment advocates say that could be seen as intimidation. and turns out today was not last call for a popular watering hole. the gold dust lounge is still in business. the eviction order didn't happen here. there was a lot of attention focusing on the fate of the bar. the eviction appears to be blocked by a lawsuit at this point. >> the lawyer said everybody still has their jobs, and we're celebrating that we're still here. the landlord accuses the bar owners of misleading the public about the real situation and says the gold dust owners knew their lease had a 90-day cancellation clause. >> rally today, where they're trying to keep open. the managers say they're shutting down april 15th, because the lease is set to

expire. the rally organizers say the 51- year-old bowling alley provides jobs and recreation for thousands of people and hope the landlord will renew the lease. and east bay homeowners hoping to avoid foreclosure got the word from experts today. they sponsored a community event where there was advice to homeowners. they presented a budget that shows your cash flow, and to keep asking for help. >> keep trying, you know if you don't play, you can't win. you have to be strong, push forward if you want to keep your house. >> besides federal loan modifications, california's keep your home program may also provide some relief to strapped homeowners, the prices have yet to climb. and a group of undocumented immigrants kicking off in san francisco, hoping to get legal status for those who attend college or join the military. ktvu's ken savage has more. >> reporter: well, this group

is planning to march or walk from san francisco obviously the way to washington, d.c. fighting for the dream act, they hope it will become a key incident this session. they are rallying with the group here, this is one of many stops they will make along the way. and earlier today we were there as they began this very personal journey. >> dreamers, united, we'll never be divided. >> reporter: describing themselves as undocumented and unafraid, they gathered on the north end of the golden gate bridge today, to begin a 3000- mile walk to the nation's capitol. one of them is 23-year-old lucas silva, born in brazil, and brought here by the age of one. >> brazil is foreign to me, i don't know the customs, the culture, this is what i'm used to. this is my home. i want an opportunity to work and contribute. >> reporter: the young illegal

immigrants who go to college or join the military hope to have a chance at legal status. they want to discuss it. >> we want to discuss the issues, put them out in the open so that we can in the end, hopefully turn their support in favor of us. >> reporter: and one of the people making this cross country trek is actually a legal citizen. her motivation to march? family, randy gutierrez is marching for her older brother, a college student living here illegally. >> i am fighting for them because i believe that they deserve a future. >> reporter: in 2010, congress failed to pass the dream act. but this group is hoping lawmakers will give it another chance. they plan to wind up their walk in washington, d.c. in october. live tonight, berkeley, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 action news. and turning now to election 2012. and rick santorum racking up yet another victory, winning

the presidential caucuses in kansas. the former pennsylvania senator took 51% of the vote, with mitt romney keeping 21%, and ron paul took 13%, the win means that santorum has now picked up 33 of the 40 kansas delegates. but mitt romney still leads the delegate race with 453 of the over one one hundred needed for the numbers. santorum has over 217. both he and ron paul were the only candidates to campaign in kansas. the texas congressman says he is not planning to get out of this race any time soon. >> i never think it is do or die, everybody is still in the race, there is no declared winner. so we'll all do what we're doing, making the most out of the chance to get more delegates. >> reporter: he sent the morning in overland kansas and has not won any caucuses so

far. and newt gingrich is focusing on alabama and mississippi. he won georgia on super tuesday and wants to stay alive with two more wins in southern states. >> if we can win alabama and mississippi tuesday night, we'll re-set the campaign for i guess the ninth or 10th time, sometime on wednesday. this has been the wildest roller coaster, i tell people it is like riding space mountain at disney world. >> newt gingrich will chris cross the state to make the most out of the turnout. and mitt romney had no appearances today but spent time in alabama and mississippi, hoping to score his first win in the south. >> the president has not succeeded. this president has failed. and that is the reason we'll get rid of him in 2012. >> the former massachusetts governor won caucuses in the pacific island of guam and the northern marianna islands. we continue on ktvu with the election coverage, just lock for the politics page.

tomorrow. an unimaginable 9.0 earthquake, an overwhelming tsunami, and flooding that overwhelmed the area along the coast of japan, and fear throughout the world. 19,000 people died. and 10s of thousands lost their homes. japan has been working hard to re-build. but rescue crews say there are more tough choices to make. >> there is a lot of conflict between some of the local people who want the places built back as they were. the local authority who want to merge some of the smaller hamlets which were pretty much totally wiped off the map. >> the tsunami crossed the pacific, and later reached us here in santa cruz, damaging the harbor. in one of many events tomorrow recalling the disaster, san francisco's japantown will host the event tomorrow. and power still out to some homes after an overnight

accident that snapped the power pole. the accident happened at jupiter street, the driver taken to the medical center. about 600 customers had power restored this morning. and the utility company hopes to have the lights back on to the remaining 30 customers by 9:00 tonight. and oakland police saying a man is in custody linked to an illegal street race early this morning. officers recovered a badly damaged car there at the scene near third street. oakland police followed another vehicle, suspected of taking part in that race. the chp picked up the chase, and later arrested one suspect in castro valley. and san mateo police looking at an investigation that led to a huge drug bust. the officials provided these pictures of more than 500 marijuana plants in a home near west hillsdale boulevard. 49-year-old linn tang was arrested on suspicion of

growing marijuana illegally. and a very famous television doctor paying a visit to the bay area today. ktvu has more on the secrets dr. oz shared, regarding a healthy life-style. right now. in fact you can see the cloud deck pushing back into the bay. so with that, we cool off today, and the cooler weather continues into sunday, tonight, clouds, fog, drizzle, the light showers earlier. probably in the form of drizzle about two hours ago, a chance of showers as we head into sunday, and this is a significant change, more storms lighting up offshore, we have significant rain to talk about for the upcoming week. overnight lows tomorrow morning, a chance of showers, fairly likely especially up in the north bay, the readings back up, back down to the 40s, santa rosa, 42, san jose, 47 degrees, and sunday, we have that shower chances, especially up in the north bay, a chance he will where, not expecting a lot south of the golden gate bridge. and more storms develop, in fact the storm series setting up for the upcoming week. increasing rain on tuesday, especially for the north bay, and now the graph is spreading
